Q&A: Donna Sidwell DeGracia on Reconstructing Hope After Breast Cancer Diagnosis

Wise Ink author Donna Sidwell DeGracia shares her refreshingly honest and multifaceted journey with breast cancer in her new book Reconstructing Hope: Intrusions, Oxymorons, and Transformations in the Breast Cancer Marathon.

Why was publishing Reconstructing Hope important to you?

As a two-time breast cancer survivor and a medical professional, my own journey and conversations with friends made me acutely aware that even though breast cancer is common, it can be an isolating experience that changes us in ways we never imagined. I also realized that the patient perspective is very different from the clinicians focus on diagnosis and treatment. I wanted to create something that both provided useful information and created a sense of community. I wanted something that would teach both patients and providers by expanding perspectives.

What, if anything, did you feel like was lacking in other books in your genre?

It seemed that most of the books on breast cancer were either personal memoirs, "chicken soup" type feel good books, or glorified patient handouts.

What's something you learned about yourself through writing?

Writing is always a way to process life. In learning about the experiences of others, I was able to explore my own experience and put it into the context of my values and my goals. I was able to embrace the transformations that had occurred in my own life. I learned to have more compassion for myself.

What are some books you’ve read recently that have inspired you?

One book I read recently, The Beauty in Breaking, made me reflect on everything I learned in writing my book; about how beauty, strength, and growth come from hard times and struggle.

What do you hope readers walk away thinking after they’ve read your book?

I hope that readers will learn something new about breast cancer, but also that they will realize that hope is an essential element in finding joy and strength in unexpected places.
