Freelance Opportunities
Wise Ink is looking for freelance marketing copywriters, web designers, illustrators, designers, and experienced* book editors, proofreaders, and ghostwriters who are skilled in all genres. Higher education degrees are not required, and applicants can be based anywhere.
For consideration, please fill out this form and attach least two work samples.
*We are looking for applicants who have worked with publishers on book projects over 25,000 words according to the grammar and style conventions as described in the Chicago Manual of Style. At this time, we are NOT interested in editing and proofreading applicants who have experience writing or editing shorter pieces, writing and editing web content, or writing or editing journalistic pieces. It is important to us that you’ve worked with books before! We are, however, happy to review shorter writing samples from ghostwriters.
Marketing Copywriters
Must be a creative who enjoys working with authors, speakers, thought leaders, influencers, and entrepreneurs
Must have demonstrated experience writing marketing copy (press releases, website content, etc.)
Experience writing back cover copy preferred
Note that projects are assigned on an as-needed basis

Website Designers
Ability to work within a site builder (like SquareSpace, WordPress, or Wix) where authors can update their own webpages is strongly preferred
Must be a creative who enjoys working with authors, speakers, thought leaders, influencers, and entrepreneurs
Must have demonstrated experience creating visually engaging web pages with effective layouts
Required experience in UX and SEO
Required experience ensuring website function and stability across devices (i.e. desktop, mobile, tablet)
Required experience optimizing sites for maximum speed and scalability

Children’s Book Illustrators
Must be an inventive visual artist who is enthusiastic about kid lit and bringing mission-driven stories to life through art
Must be interested in work-for-hire, warmly receptive to author direction and feedback, and open to meeting and communicating with the author for a positive collaboration
A strong ability to commit to deadlines is essential. The typical turnaround time for a 32-page children’s book with 28+ pages of completed artwork is 3 - 4 months.
Required ability to deliver high-resolution digital image files of illustrations. (Non-digital artists are responsible for scanning or photographing their artwork.)
Experience illustrating children’s books is not required, but strongly preferred

Developmental Editors & Copyeditors
Experience in full-length book editing and Microsoft Word’s Track Changes feature required
Copyeditor applicants must be experienced with the Chicago Manual of Style, creating and using style sheets, and basic fact-checking
Required sensitivity toward delicate subject matter and marginalized voices
Interest and/or expertise in all nonfiction genres—especially self-help, memoir, and business—preferred
Ability to work with four-week turnarounds for standard projects (55,000-70,000 words) preferred
Developmental editor applicants should include samples of past editorial letters with their editing samples through the form linked above
Proofreaders
Must be experienced in full-length book proofreading, trained not just in grammar but also in common design typesetting errors
Must be experienced with the Chicago Manual of Style and PDF markup tools in Adobe Acrobat or similar programs
Interest and/or expertise in all nonfiction genres—especially self-help, memoir, and business—preferred
Ability to work with two-week turnarounds for standard projects (55,000-70,000 words) preferred
Applicants should please include editing samples in the format of an Adobe PDF displaying their proofreading markup through the form linked above
Ghostwriters
Must be an experienced writer capable of adapting their voice and style to the subject and author at hand
Must be an organized author interviewer and a diligent note-taker
Required sensitivity toward delicate subject matter and marginalized voices
Previous book-length ghostwriting experience not required, but preferred; extensive copywriting experience is okay
Interest and/or expertise in all nonfiction genres—especially self-help, memoir, and business—preferred

Designers
Required mastery of Adobe InDesign
Required experience designing print media with CMYK and PMS color usage, setting up documents for spot gloss and foil, and implementing the correct bleeds and margins
