Position Summary:

We are seeking an editorial intern to support our project management team as they guide clients through the publishing process. The editorial intern will play a pivotal role in assisting team members throughout the book publishing process, from acquisitions to production. This individual will report to the creative director and assist the team with book prepress checks, updating internal data on clients and vendors in our CRM software, assessing book pitches, and ensuring our work meets the highest quality standards. Higher education degrees are not required. Applicants can be based anywhere in the US. This is a part-time position (10-15 hours per week), that will require the editorial intern to have at least partial availability during 9a.m. - 5p.m. on weekdays.

Requirements:

  1. Strong Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively collaborate with authors and internal team members. Familiarity with the Chicago Manual of Style, Microsoft Word’s tracking changes and comments functions, and prior experience with digital client communications and file management preferred.

  2. Organizational Skills: Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects at a time, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

  3. Data Management Expertise: The ideal candidate will be comfortable organizing files in cloud storage with company-wide folder and naming conventions. They will prioritize correctly labeling different versions of files and feel comfortable working with multiple file formats. Experience with Microsoft Word, Adobe Acrobat, Google Drive, Adobe Creative Suite (particularly Photoshop and InDesign), and familiarity with ClickUp or other project management software is a plus but not required.

  4. Team Player: A positive and enthusiastic collaborator who can work effectively with cross-functional teams.

  5. Adaptive Learning: Willingness to learn, ask questions, and uphold internal processes with an eye for detail.

Responsibilities:

  1. Editorial Support: Help the project management team support authors through the publishing process. Send follow-up emails to clients, assist with children’s book pagination and editing, assist with developmental editing and writing coaching, and perform small editorial projects as-needed.

  2. Prepress and At-Press Checks: Review book files before they go to press, completing Wise Ink’s prepress checklist to verify file, design, and textual correctness before sending books to the printer. The editorial intern will also be an extra set of eyes to check for quality issues in proofs at press.

  3. Acquisitions Support: Review and summarize concept pitches from clients, summarize potential authors’ current internet presences, and make preliminary judgments about whether a prospective project is a good fit for our brand and service offerings.

  4. File Management Support: Help label and organize project files, verify that images are the correct size and in the right color space to print, help create new documents and templates, and help copy our internal file infrastructure for new projects.

  5. Data Management Support: Help organize and consolidate vendor and client information in our internal CRM software, ClickUp.

  6. Copywriting: Write copy for author websites, articles, blog posts, and press releases, paying special attention to match the voice of the project, conduct at least one round of self-editing, and follow each project’s formatting guidelines.

COMPENSATION:

The editorial intern will be compensated at $20/hr for 10-15 hours per work week. This role provides a flexible, remote work environment that allows you to thrive while helping our project management team reach their goals. If you have a passion for project management, good communication skills, an eye for detail, and the desire to make a meaningful impact in the world of book publishing, we would love to hear from you.

The application deadline was April 19th, 2024. We look forward to reviewing your application!

The 2019 Diversity Baseline Survey found that 79 percent of the publishing industry identified as White, 88 percent were straight, and 92 percent were non-disabled. The book industry has the power to shape culture in big and small ways, and the people behind the books make a huge difference in determining which stories are amplified and which are shut out. Wise Ink is committed to diversity in publishing and will prioritize applications from marginalized groups.
