Author Feature with Anne Winkler-Morey

Why was publishing this book important to you? : My bicycle trip around the perimeter of the United States left me with profound insights into how the United States can heal from historical trauma; how we can channel our love of the land into radical hospitality instead of nativism; how we can overcome false divisions and address what truly divides us.

What, if anything, did you feel like was lacking in other books in your genre?: There are many bicycle touring books and other extreme travel books. Some are too focused on the miles, the speed, the hardship and pleasures of the ride, the equipment, and the athletic prowess or lack thereof. They are less interested in the world that such a ride or walk gives one the privilege to see.

What's something you learned about yourself through writing?: Well, I learned about writing. I learned that my own experiences, especially those traumatic ones, can be a lens in which I can build empathy and understanding of people who live and think differently from me.

What do you hope readers walk away thinking after they’ve read your book? : That so much that we think is NATURAL, about how the United States operates, is a result of changeable policy and practice. We don't have to allow corporations to ravish communities, leaving only pollution and spent lives. We don't have to build walls and gates. We don't have to cover up all historical malfeasance in order to build community solidarity. We do not need to accept ever-growing income inequality. It is not natural for the 99% to be so divided. It is manufactured.
Finally, you are capable of so much more than you have come to think is your natural capability.

What are some books you’ve read recently that have inspired you? :

  • Holocaust to Resistance by Suzanne Berliner Weiss

  • The Wages of Whiteness by David R Roediger

  • The Body Keeps the Score by Bessel Van Der Kolk

  • The Nightwatchman by Louise Erdrich

  • Let The Record Show by Sarah Schulman

  • Tell Me Your Name and I Will Testify by Carolyn Holbrook

  • The Heartbeat of Wounded Knee by David Treuer

  • Braiding Sweet Grass by Robin Wall Kimmerer

  • The Yellow House by Sarah M. Broom Heartland by Sarah Smarsh
